Unfinished Business for Childs in NSSS
12/12/08…NASR/ASCF Media Release
Jack Childs has been plying his trade on the dirt tracks of Queensland for more than 25 years, racing primarily in the sedan stronghold of Rockhampton and other central Queensland venues. In recent years though, the veteran campaigner has expanded his racing operation with significant equipment upgrades and an emphasis on chasing the bigger events around the country. Therefore, Childs will be traversing the highways of Australia as a contracted driver with the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
Childs started his motorsport career at 19 years of age in Toowoomba, competing in dirt circuit racing at Echo Valley aboard an FJ Holden. After just one season, which included a 4th-place finish in the South East Queensland Championship, he stepped away from racing to concentrate on playing Rugby League.
In 1981, Childs succumbed to the urge to go racing again and started competing in Speedway events in Rockhampton. He built an LJ Torana and raced in the Bomber division, winning the Queensland Championship at the now defunct Bouldercombe Speedway (near Rockhampton) in 1984.
He progressed into the Modified Production ranks aboard a Ford Escort, before switching to a Holden Torana and ultimately a Holden Commodore. On two occasions, he won the Club Championship in the Modified Production division.
Given the rich history of the category within the Rockhampton region, and given his success in other categories, it was perhaps inevitable that Childs would ultimately progress into the Super Sedan ranks. For more than 10 years, he competed quite successfully throughout central Queensland, winning the Rockhampton Club Championship on two occasions and rarely finishing outside the top three in the season pointscore.
Childs took part in the 2006/2007 National Super Sedan Series, only to have his campaign interrupted by an engine ailment that prevented him from completing the full series schedule. After a slow start, Childs impressed during round five at Moama’s Heartland Raceway, winning the Sport Engines Hard Charger Award for his efforts in advancing to 12th in very difficult conditions after starting at the rear of the field.
Having relocated to the Sunshine Coast last year, Childs is now competing regularly in the strong Super Sedan Association championship and is primed for a return to the Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series. After the disappointment of his 2006/2007 campaign, Childs is utterly determined to complete the full schedule this season and successfully make the transition from accomplished local racer to genuine contender against the best in the business.
With a wealth of experience and a potent Danny Smith-built Rocket Pontiac at his disposal, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are pleased to confirm Jack Childs as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
