Randall Masters Moama
Randall Masters Moama…15/01/07…NASR/ASCF Media Release
Defending series champion Wayne Randall expanded his lead in the 2006/2007 National Super Sedan Series with a hard fought win in round five at Moama’s Heartland Raceway on Saturday night (January 13). In difficult conditions, Randall qualified his AFCO Shock Doctor Pontiac on pole position for the 30-lap feature event and withstood challenges from Michael Gee and Paddy Ward to score a narrow win.
Gee occupied second spot during the opening stages of the race before drifting too wide in turn two and allowing Ward and Steve Jordan to slip underneath. Ward called upon his vast experience and skill to remain in second spot through to the chequer despite the best efforts of Jordan and the recovering Gee, who ultimately regained one spot from his fellow Queenslander to secure third.
Jordan was solid once again in finishing fourth ahead of Wayne Brims, John Leslight and Lucas Roberts, who claimed the AFCO Shock Doctor Lucky Sevens award. Darren Kane cast his disappointment over a contentious heat race decision aside to advance from 14th to eighth, while previous round winner Peter Nicola finished ninth after transferring from the B Main. Brett Hignett completed the top ten ahead of Rockhampton’s Michael Doblo, who secured his best result for the series thus far. Another Rockhampton-based driver in Jack Childs made the most of his first feature race start in the series, picking up the Sport Engines Hard Charger Award for a sterling effort that saw him finish 12th after starting from position 20.
The track conditions made passing difficult – but certainly not impossible – and unfortunately several drivers suffered flat tyres in the latter stages of the feature event, including front row starter Dave Gartner and Tasmania’s Brad Smith, along with Bill Miller and Michael Nicola. Despite the conditions, the feature event was relatively incident free with 19 of the 20 starters still circulating when the chequer appeared. John McGeorge was the only driver who failed to go the distance, heading infield after contact with the back straight wall in the opening stages.
Heat winners on the night included Ward, Leslight, Brims, Roberts, McGeorge and Gartner, who would have topped qualifying if not for the penalty incurred as a result of his late arrival on the circuit for hot laps. Both Childs and Michael Tomkins looked likely winners in their opening heats, only to spin themselves out of contention in turn three in almost identical circumstances. Randall, meanwhile, duplicated his qualifying performance from the previous round with runner-up results in each of his heats.
Ward took out the JD Couriers B Dash over McGeorge, Jordan, Leslight, Roberts and South Aussie surprise packet Daniel Miller. Randall secured pole position with victory in the Speedway Sedan Digest A Dash, leading home Gartner, Gee, Ward, Brims and McGeorge. In a drive reminiscent of his Avalon feature win, Peter Nicola blasted around the outside to win the B Main. Vaughan finished in second spot, followed by Doblo, Bill Miller, Childs and Ashley Bergmeier.
