Unfinished Business for McHugh Heading for NSSS

06/10/07…NASR/SSA Media Release

In his first full season of competition following a short sabbatical from dirt track competition, hard charging Queenslander Jamie McHugh has the National Super Sedan Series etched firmly on his agenda for the coming season.  Having joined forces with the highly experienced Boettcher Race Parts team, McHugh is the latest driver to be confirmed as a contracted competitor for the 2007/2008 championship.

McHugh took his first tentative steps towards a return to speedway competition in the latter part of last season, less than 12 months after he stepped away from the sport to focus on a return to road racing.  In just a handful of shows with the Boettcher team, McHugh was instantly on the pace and his success – podium finishes in two of the four events contested, including the Grand Prix of Queensland at Toowoomba – sealed the deal for a full-time return to the Super Sedan ranks.

Having enjoyed a successful road racing career prior to switching to dirt track competition in 1995, McHugh quickly established himself as one of the leading drivers in the Super Sedan ranks, accumulating an impressive array of results that include victories in many of Australia’s biggest events.   McHugh’s first major win came just five years after switching to speedway when he took out the 2000/2001 New South Wales Super Sedan Championship at Lismore.  During the 2003/2004 season, McHugh snared his second state title with victory in the Queensland Championship at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway.

In addition to his championship wins, McHugh has also accumulated multiple successes in Australia’s most prestigious blue ribbon events.  McHugh is a three-time winner of the International Firecracker at Brisbane International Speedway and has also triumphed in Australia’s richest race, the Apple Isle Grand Prix at Latrobe Speedway in Tasmania. The 2004/2005 season was perhaps his most successful yet with eight feature race victories to score an emphatic win in the Super Sedan Association Championship Series.  He also took out the inaugural Central Queensland Grand Prix in Rockhampton and finished runner-up in the Grenville Anderson Memorial and the East Coast Grand National as well as representing Australia against the United States in a series of test match events.

In the inaugural National Super Sedan Series, McHugh finished second overall in the championship standings, having finished inside the top ten at every round.  He took out round five in Brisbane and finished on the podium at Avalon, Moama and Adelaide, however it was his spectacular charge into eighth place during round three in Rockhampton that remains firmly etched in the memories of those who witnessed it.  Having finished agonisingly short in the championship chase on that occasion, McHugh will be leaving no stone unturned in his bid to clinch the NSSS crown.

Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Jamie McHugh as a contracted driver in the 2007/2008 National Super Sedan Series.  Other drivers confirmed for the 2007/2008 series include Wayne Randall, Michael Gee, Brad Smith, Dave Gartner and Paddy Ward, with further announcements to follow in the weeks ahead.  For the latest news and series information, visit the official series website at www.nationalsupersedanseries.com
