Tin Top Terrors Tear Up Archerfield

A dust free and racy track made for some riveting wheel-to-wheel racing last night at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway and the Modified Sedans put on one hell of a show. Their racing was pretty clean throughout the heats but the 30 lap feature was quite the opposite and the fans on the hill loved every minute of it.
It was a drama filled start with four attempts at making it past lap 3 and fire on the main straight (all are ok) a bit of rhythm finally kicked in after all of that. Pole sitter Todd Doyle took command, extending his lead during the next five laps until another caution light. By this time 8 competitors had already parked it up for the night. After a fifth stoppage, would you believe a staggering 14 out 20 cars that started, were on the infield; too numerous to mention.
Doyle made the trip south from Gympie worthwhile and seemed unstoppable in his Nashie’s Produce VE Holden Commodore, he led flag to flag. “It was a pretty tricky track, I just thought I’d drive around the bottom and hopefully no one would come around the outside of me. I’m really pleased John Kelly put us back on here again; it was really cool, I’m looking forward to coming back in May,” he said.
Ipswich racer Gavin Fletcher fought hard for his second place finish in the Fusion Signs and Graphics XF Falcon. He said first would have been better but he was happy with second and it was a good effort from the crew. He’s also looking forward to coming back. “It’s a lot of fun ’round this track, high speed into the corners… I really like it.”
Gympie’s Aidan Raymont transferred from the B Main and stormed home to take the Cooroy Auto Wreckers BA Falcon to third place on the podium. His night didn’t go according to plan, getting caught up in heat race incidents but the Australian champion showed his prowess through the traffic (was coming second at one point) and brushed the carnage aside.
Outstanding, was the word used by Firecracker 1000 event organiser Ryan Harris to describe the night. “It was great to be back in Brisbane and it was a great event. A bit of carnage reigned at the end but it was still a great race.”
Heat wins went to Gavin Fletcher, Todd Doyle (2), Shannon Blackburn, Brett Baxter, Greg Worling and Allan Nash. Add Mark Ferguson and Darren Baldwin to the list and there you have the top eight that made up the Dash.
Next Saturday night will see Sprintcars and Midgets head the draw card along with Modlites, Open Sedans, Brisbane Sedans and the SSA Juniors. Check www.brisbanespeedway.com.au and www.facebook/archerfieldspeedway for details and updates.
