Super Sedans in Lismore on Saturday Night

06/12/07…SSA Media Release

This Saturday night, Super Sedans make their first appearance for the season at Lismore Speedway for round 8 of the 2007/2008 Ian Boettcher Volkswagen Super Sedan Championship Series.  Fresh from a fantastic display last weekend in Toowoomba, the drivers will be looking to provide an equally spectacular show for the local fans and new promoter David Lander.

The Lismore venue has a rich history of sedan competition and that tradition continues this weekend with a strong field of cars nominated for the event, which will be televised nationally on Fox Sports.  In what will hopefully set a precedent for Super Sedan events at the circuit, the field includes drivers from three states.

Heading the line-up are series protagonists Wayne Brims and Jamie McHugh, the duo who have won six of the seven rounds between them and established a huge buffer over their rivals in the chase for the championship.  Last weekend in Toowoomba, McHugh qualified on pole position and finished in second spot, while Brims charged from the rear of the field after an early spin to finish in third spot.  Both drivers have accumulated three feature race wins in SSA competition so far this season and either driver could emerge with the points lead after Saturday night’s feature as the series head into a brief hiatus to accommodate opening rounds of the national series.

Of course, Australian champion Michael Gee will be desperate for a change in fortunes and, if he can avoid the mechanical dramas that have afflicted the team so far this season and reproduce the form that saw him dominate last season, he may well prove unbeatable.  Fellow Sunshine Coast-based racer Geoff Phillips will be hoping for a greater return if he can repeat his heroics from the previous round, having now established himself as a genuine contender.  Paul Geary also found some form in Toowoomba and, as a feature race winner previously at Lismore, he should also be confident of a strong result.

Others expected to feature prominently in the results include former NSW champ Ian Brims, Craig McGeorge, Steve Pearce, Victoria’s Ashley Bergmeier and the Newcastle-based duo of Brett Smith and Robert Carrig, both of whom are more than capable of upstaging the SSA regulars.  Lismore’s own Tania Smith will no doubt be hoping for a strong result, while Alan Robertson is looking to consolidate on his best ever performance from last weekend.  Also in the field are Wayne Miles, Barry Craft, Will Gould and Ray Lane, while Dirt Modified ace Matt Pascoe will unveil his brand new Super Sedan in preparation for the start of his NSSS campaign later this month.

The Super Sedans hit the track for hot laps at 6.00pm.
