Miller Seeking NSSS Success
17/12/08…NASR/SSA Media Release
Dan Miller is a far from typical Super Sedan driver. Whilst most drivers move into the Super Sedan category after toiling for many years in a variety of feeder categories at their local racetrack, occasionally making interstate forays to gain experience, Miller’s path to Super Sedan success has been decidedly different. Now in his third season of Super Sedan racing, Miller came from the rarified atmospheres of the world Formula 1 circuit, having enjoyed a long stint with the Williams Formula 1 team. Although no longer traveling the world, Miller will be traversing Australia again this season as a contracted driver with the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
Miller’s opportunity at Williams F1 came after stints in Formula Ford, Formula Renault, Formula 3000 and Sportcars, working with a former F1 team owner in John McDonald. Having been recommended to the Williams team by McDonald, Miller was snapped up and spent 9 years as a crew member with one of the most famous racing teams in the world.
Tired of the endless travel and time away from his family, Miller returned to Australia and underwent a radical change in direction with regard to his motorsport endeavours, jumping into the cockpit of an ex-Luke Pyne Pontiac Grand Prix. Despite his experience within the racing industry, Miller had never raced any type of racecar prior to his first Super Sedan outing, which makes his rookie season results somewhat remarkable. In his first season in 2006/2007, Miller collected nine feature race wins, taking out the JD Couriers Super Sedan Series and the Murray Bridge Speedway season pointscore. Not surprisingly, he was voted Rookie of the Year. During 2006/2007 he also took part in five rounds of the Carline Mufflers National Super Series, his best result coming in round six at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway with a fine 4th-place finish in the feature event.
Last season saw Miller make his first attempt at the full Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series schedule and his performances throughout the tournament belied his inexperience behind the wheel. In the rain-affected opening round in Rockhampton, Miller immediately signaled his arrival as a series contender, qualifying third for the feature event before the weather intervened and prevented the race from getting underway. Although unable to replicate that performance at the remaining Queensland rounds – failing to finish at both Brisbane and Toowoomba – Miller’s wheel-hiking style proved a big hit with race fans.
The second half of the series produced better fortunes, starting with a 12th-place finish in round four at Mildura after qualifying through the B Main. Round five at Avalon featured his first top ten result for the series when he finished in 7th spot. The penultimate round at Mount Gambier saw the team suffer a heartbreaking loss when a feature race victory seemed assured. After somehow emerging unscathed from a spectacular heat race pile-up, Miller looked in control of the feature event, having thwarted the advances of several challengers. However, a flat tyre just a few laps from home sent him plummeting through the field and out of contention, eventually credited with 19th place. Another top-ten finish in the final round saw Miller finish 15th overall in the series standings, a terrific result for an inexperienced competitor.
Miller also enjoyed a strong season in domestic competition during the 2007/2008 season, finishing second in the JD Couriers series and snaring 4th spot in the South Australian Super Sedan Championship. His strong local form has continued this season, clinching a runner-up finish in round 3 of the JD Couriers series at Speedway City and then recording an identical result in the Murray Bridge Championship, advancing through the field from position eight after failing to finish two of his qualifying heats.
With extensive experience at the very top of the motorsport spectrum and having demonstrated his ability behind the wheel, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are pleased to confirm Dan Miller as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
