Korn Returns to NSSS Duty
03/12/08…NASR/ASCF Media Release
Refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to rumble, Queensland’s Des Korn is returning to the national Super Sedan spotlight this season as a contracted driver with the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series. Based in Mackay in the north of the sunshine state, Korn has never allowed the tyranny of distance to serve as a hindrance in his efforts to partake in elite level speedway competition across Australia. After all, taking part in a ‘local’ Super Sedan Association event each weekend can involve a 10-hour drive in each direction.
Korn started his racing career more than 30 years ago in Gladstone and enjoyed tremendous success throughout the central Queensland region with a multitude of feature race victories and track championships, including a win in the prestigious Rebel 1000 event at Bundaberg’s Carina Speedway. After 17 years of racing, he stepped out of the cockpit to focus on the relocation of his transport business from Gladstone to Dysart.
With his business well established, Korn returned to competition and quickly became a regular fixture at every major Super Sedan event in Australia, accumulating a solid record of success along the way. Highlights included third-place finishes in the prestigious East Coast Grand National at Lismore Speedway and the Western Australian Super Sedan Championship at Kalgoorlie Speedway, as well as a string of impressive results and podium finishes in the ultra-competitive Super Sedan Association Championship series. During both the 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons, Korn finished inside the top ten in the SSA points despite missing several rounds.
In the inaugural National Super Sedan Series, Korn started strongly with a 6th-place finish in the opening round and then backed up with 12th overall at Moama’s Heartland Raceway. Unfortunately, the next three rounds proved fruitless and frustrating as he fell victim to a series of incidents, including a spectacular pile-up during round five in Brisbane. Ultimately, illness curtailed his series campaign prematurely, preventing him from taking part in the final round and relegating him to 13th overall in the championship.
Having only raced sporadically over the last couple of seasons for a variety of reasons, Korn is now refreshed, focussed and primed for a full-scale return to elite Super Sedan competition. For his 2008/2009 campaign, Korn will be piloting a new Ray Finch-built Dodge Charger that has already clocked some impressive lap times in SSA events so far this season.
Possessing one of the most professionally presented racing operations in the category – including an imposing Mack transporter – along with some new found freedom as a result of the sale of his business empire, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Des Korn as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
