26 Junior Street Sedans contested their State Title at Maryborough last night. The heats were hotly contested throughout the night on a very wet race track. Cars quickly lost their colour schemes when coated in the fine slurry being thrown up. The top 16 drivers went directly through to the A Main with the remaining 8 cars left running contesting the B Main.
Michele Blavius led the B Main away on a saturated track immediately after a brief interval, Casey Purcell, Tiffany O’Keeffe, Rema Pooley, Rick Schleusener, Kirstie Harm, Anita Cooper, Josh Howell all tried in vain to finish in the first four to transfer to the A Main. Successful ones to do so were Michele Blavius, Rema Pooley, Anita Cooper and Tiffany O’Keeffe were the ones to take up their positions in the A Main.
The A Main consisted of Brett Baxter, Jason Slade, Trent Humphreys, Max Clarke, Brandon O’Keeffe, Sam Cordie, Mitchell Thomsen, Micheal Budgen, Ryan Pearce, Ben Rossow, Ash Volk, Danielle Harris, Hamish Redman, Jaymee Budgen, Bradley Jennings, Amy Smith plus the 4 transferees from the B Main.
The 20 lap started at a hectic pace, the first stoppage coming on Lap 5, Brett Baxter had managed to lead up to this point, at the restart once again Baxter was in control, Jason Slade and Trent Humphries were never far away waiting for Baxter to make a mistake that they could capitalise on.
The final stoppage came after 17 laps had been completed – a 3 car crash involving top running cars, Baxter, Slade and Thomsen were unable to continue in the event. This left Trent Humphreys in control of the race lead but to his dismay the front right hand tyre was quickly deflating, once the race got back underway it was obvious that although there were only 3 laps left to race there was not sufficient air in the tyre for Humphreys to complete the distance.
This allowed the AU Falcon of Brandan O’Keeffe to take over the race lead and lead all the way to the chequered flag. Ash Volk crossed in second place only to be disqualified later during post race checks for a breach of the Racing Rules – namely electronic communication to the driver. Ben Rossow moved up from 3rd to 2nd and Rema Pooley managed to be awarded 3rd place.
