Great Field for Toowoomba Round Four
04/11/10…SSA Media Release
After a somewhat shambolic start to the season with venue swaps and washouts afflicting the opening rounds of competition, the 2010/2011 Ian Boettcher Proton Super Sedan Championship fires back into life this weekend with round four to be decided at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway on Saturday night (November 6). A venue steeped in speedway sedan history, the Toowoomba circuit always provides great racing and the scene is set for a cracking night of competition.
Series leader Darren Kane will take a 67-point advantage into the weekend but will be facing his toughest challenge of the season, with more than 20 cars nominated from across Queensland and interstate. Kane’s opening round adversary and perennial front runner Steve Jordan will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing result in Mackay that saw him drop from first to fourth in the series standings.
Rockhampton’s Craig Torr sits second overall in the points chase after top-five results in the opening two events of the season and, as anybody who witnessed his magnificent duel with national champ Jamie McHugh at Toowoomba last season will attest, he is a huge chance on Saturday night. Meanwhile, rookie racer and event sponsor Darren Lester has also been outstanding in the two rounds completed thus far – which included a runner-up finish in Mackay – and he occupies third overall in the early stages of the championship.
Mackay’s Des Korn, rising star Jason Campbell, Steve Pearce, Graeme Elliott and Chris Albert all sit inside the top ten in the championship standings and all of them are amongst the nominations again this weekend. However, the biggest challenge to the current leaders may well come from a trio of competitors making their season debuts. The New South Wales-based duo of Ian and Wayne Brims, with a string of state and national championship wins to their names, and former NSSS champion Michael Doblo are amongst the starters for the first time and must be considered a genuine threat to upstage the regulars.
Others making their first appearance for the season will be Barry Craft, Jack Childs, Michael Hally, Colin Hockley and Sean Black aboard an ex-Matt Pascoe Sweet-Dodge, with Scott Galea, Michael Roza, Lenny Black, Shayne Lau and Roma’s Lyall Fisher, completing the entry list.
Drivers briefing is scheduled for 4.45pm, with hot laps and grand parade from 5.30pm. Each driver will contest three qualifying heats to determine the starting grid for the Lester Air Conditioning and Electrical-sponsored 30-lap feature race. A great field of Super Sedans will be supported by a program that includes Junior Sedans, Lightning Sprints and the mighty Modified Productions. Bring on Saturday night!
