New South Wales has produced many of the most accomplished Super Sedan competitors in history. In fact, for many years the state was the undisputed mecca for Super Sedan competition, with circuits such as Lismore and Newcastle luring drivers from across the country to take on their homegrown superstars and the very best international competitors.
Whilst the closure of the Newcastle circuit had a detrimental impact in the short term, the category has continued to produce some outstanding talents within the Super Sedan ranks. Lismore and Newcastle remain sedan strongholds, however it is the growth of the category in regional areas that has produced a new breed of stars from all corners of the state. The support of regional venues and the development of a coordinated series of events have helped revitalize the category.
The strength of Super Sedan racing in New South Wales at the moment is evident through the fact that the biggest ever contingent of NSW-based drivers will be contesting the 2010/2011 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series. No less than five of NSW’s best will be chasing the championship this season, including two experienced drivers making their series debuts.
Headlining the NSW challenge will be perennial series supporter Tony Barklimore, along with 2009/2010 rookie sensation Clayton Pyne, while Narromine’s Brett Hignett also returns to the series this year. Joining the tour for the first time this season will be Lismore’s Tania Smith and Newcastle veteran Bernie Roberts. While Smith has contested selected series rounds in previous years, Roberts is yet to take part in any NSSS event. Both drivers are welcome additions to the driver roster in their bid to win both the Rookie of the Year title and a series championship.
