Best Set for NSSS

09/12/08…NASR/SSA Media Release

South Australia’s Shane Best is the latest in a long line of drivers to make a successful transition from the Modified Production division into the Super Sedan ranks, although few have enjoyed such success so early in their V8 career.  Last season saw Best embark on his debut season of Super Sedan competition and he immediately set about upstaging the established stars of the South Aussie scene, winning the JD Couriers Super Sedan Series staged at Adelaide’s Speedway City.  Not content with dominating locally, Best also hit the road as a contracted driver in the Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series and has confirmed his participation again this season.

Ordinarily, a top ten finish overall in Australia’s premier Super Sedan series would be enough to secure the Rookie of the Year crown.  Despite a superb debut season on the national trail that saw his running as high as fifth overall with just two rounds remaining, Best was ultimately denied the rookie title by Queensland’s Chris Bussey.  Despite his unfamiliarity with the various circuits, Best was instantly on the pace, as evidenced by his sixth-place finish in round three at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway. However, it was the next round at Mildura’s Timmis Speedway that saw Best emerge as a bona fide Super Sedan star when he powered to a runner-up finish.  He backed up the following night at Avalon Raceway to finish fourth before a disappointing end to his NSSS campaign – which included DNF’s in the final two rounds – saw him finish 10th overall, which was an outstanding result in such illustrious company.

Prior to making the switch to Super Sedans, Best dominated the local Modified Production scene.  In 1996/1997, Best experienced his first major success with a third-place result in the South Australian Championship at Mount Gambier, improving on that performance the following year at Whyalla with a runner-up finish. The 2004/2005 season saw Best score another podium result in state title competition at Bordertown, finishing in second place once again.  The next two years saw Best again feature on the state title podium, finishing third in events staged at Renmark and Murray Bridge.  With the exception of the 1996/1997 title, on each occasion Best has been the first South Australian driver to greet the chequer, cementing his reputation as South Australia’s leading driver.

Away from his home state, Best was equally impressive, scoring a runner-up finish in the 2003/2004 Australian Modified Production Championship at Albany in Western Australia, beaten only by three-time title winner Peter Lack.  Further interstate success came during the 2005/2006 season when he scored yet another 2nd-place finish, this time behind Ashley Parkinson in the Victorian Championship at Rosedale.

With nothing left to prove in the Modified Production ranks, Best has made the move into Super Sedans and enjoyed immediate success. Therefore, Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR) are very pleased to confirm Shane Best as a contracted driver in the 2008/2009 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series.
